In class thus far, I’m under the impression that we are making attempts to cultivate an awareness of the mechanism that reveals what is fiction or dream. The word reveal does not do this concept justice; after all, there is no finality to it. Revelation follows revelation as we peel back the layers of illusion surrounding us, and wake to find that we might as well still be dreaming. After reading Bizz’s blog about the Harvest Moon videogame never reaching a satisfying conclusion, I thought about how in our quest to discern fact from fiction or reality from dream, we expect (perhaps half-heartedly) to some day figure it out. We expect to discover a mechanism that will bare the whole system, that will provide us with a formula to determine once and for all what is real or illusory.
However, instead of a conclusion, our cursed awareness only buries us further under these questions. Like the frustration viewers find in the endless uncertainties and questions of LOST. The frustration is justified! It is something we want to escape, and you’d think that at some point we’d get some answers with those questions. Then again, maybe the questions born from preceding questions are an answer. Perhaps that is a little far fetched. Perhaps they are merely hints into the dark backward and abysm of our futures as inquisitive literature students.
Either way, it is hard not to feel an overwhelming futility in regards to the whole thing. Can we continually search, if we don’t exactly know what it is we are searching for? The question is essentially useless, because we will search, we don’t have a choice. Struggle as we may, retreating into the depths of ignorance is not an option. There will forever remain illusions and questions, plaguing our sense of reality and placidity. But looking on the bright side, we’ll never get bored.
